I found the book highly engaging, following the form of Lencioni's "Five Dysfunctions of a Team," or "The Goal" by Goldratt. Perfectly Square highlights the importance of conversations for producing change in an organization, and provides a way of looking at effective, ineffective, and missing conversations. It reads very much like a narrative story with bits of wisdom woven throughout in just the right spots to carry the story w/o being preachy or academic.The story made clear that transformations within an organization stem from changing the conversations. However, I found it a bit light on the inner-work required for an individual to make the shifts that would produce those conversations. Absent that, the character's shift were almost magical, and a reader would be challenged to make similar shifts on their own without coaching. Fortunately, the author is a coach :)
Despite that minor criticism, the writing style, use of imagery, descriptive prose, and the relationships of the characters make this a truly enjoyable read from any perspective.

Once I started this book, I couldn't stop until I read the whole thing. Croft uses an engaging story of a business owner to teach us about the principles of leadership, and how we can create LeadershipFlow in our own organizations and lives. I'm always seekng flow, and bringing flow to my leadership interactions is something I will strive to do now. As I read the book, I reflected on the effective, ineffective, and missing conversations that I've had. Starting tomorrow, I'll work harder to master my self first, and have effective conversations.
Written in a parable format, similar to "Who Will Do What By When" and "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team", this book is a breeze to read, but delivers powerful principles that when applied by a competent leader, open possibilities for great teams and organizations. The story is anchored around what the author calls "four tenets", one of which acts as a core premise, and the other three are essential behaviors that constitute effective leadership.
The core premise of the book is that 'your culture is 100% perfect for the results that you’re currently getting.' Culture is largely shaped by our conversations, the ones we have, the ones we don't, the ones we have well, and the ones we have poorly. The book provides excellent guidance for the aspiring leader to identify, design, and build a great culture and in turn, to produce great results. Included are several tips to upgrade your most important conversations, which are worth the price of the book on their own. The author also outlines the other three tenets, each of which probably deserve a book of their own
*Create a vision for the future that people commit to.
*Develop leaders and teams that are aligned with and committed to the vision.
*Engage in a life-long commitment to self-mastery.
This author has a unique ability to take very deep leadership topics and deliver them in down to earth, bite-sized portions that are directly applicable to the reader's circumstances. Far from a PhD dissertation, this book is going to be the best fit for practical-minded managers who desire to quickly up their leadership game and create a lasting impact in their organizations.
This book is GREAT!! It is written in a way for everyone that works in any organization can easily understand how to get your company as well as yourself where you would like to be. I highly recommend reading this book if you are looking for new ways to lead or become a leader within yourself and your organization as well. I also feel that anyone working in a family business, that is part of the family, to read this because it will truly have some resemblance to your company and your family that is involved.
Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down!
The story navigates through the struggles of a young entrepreneur and how she learns the "secrets of leadership" through the caring coaching of her mentor. Her struggles are all relevant to each of us that struggle with difficult people and situations. From culture to conversations the book is an effective teaching tool for the reader. Because leadership mastery of self and of skillset directly shapes and impacts the culture of the organizations, the book gives examples of how to not only facilitate effective conversations but to understand the underling moods and emotions. Conversations that are effective involve communication on a high plain and is at the heart of our own business future. This book discovers how to have effective conversations and create a culture that is meaningful, productive, and safe! Leadership reading at its best!
It was almost impossible to put down this exceptional book. Using a parable format that rivals anything by Lencioni ("The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team"), Blanchard ("The One-Minute Manager"), or Hanson ("Who Will Do What By When?"), Croft captures the fundamental elements of what it takes to be an effective leader and transform an organization. This book not only introduces critical concepts, but also shows how they can be put to use in the real world.
This is an amazingly easy read and the lessons will stick with you long after you put it down. Regardless of what your "official" role is in any organization, if you are in the business of leading and influencing others, do yourself a favor and read this book. One of the things that I loved about this book is that it is a relatively quick read. It will take you only about as long as a flight or a train ride and you'll be a better leader stepping through the door.
